Get a good overview of the Johannesburg New CBD, Sandton in the Northern suburbs, Houghton where Nelson Mandela lives and some of the City's top schools and universities before heading into Johannesburg CBD and the Newtown area.
• Mandela Square / Mandela house (Houghton):
We proceed to Sandton City, the modern 1st world central business and shopping district of Johannesburg, we continue through the leafy northern suburbs such as Houghton where our former leader Mr Nelson Mandela lives when he is in Johannesburg. These are the most beautiful and expensive suburbs in Gauteng. Get a good overview of the Johannesburg New CBD and some of the City's top schools and universities before heading into Johannesburg CBD and the Newtown area.
• Munro Drive:
Munro Drive is a scenic spot that's ideal if you're trying to be all romantic on a tight ... to make my move, and back onto the dark Johannesburg road in front of me. ... Drive is a national monument in Houghton and takes you up a very steep hill.
• Constitutional Hill:
Walk in their footsteps at Constitutional Hill.
Constitutional Hill is the new home of the Constitutional Court, the protector of our basic rights and freedoms. Constitutional Hill is also the site of Johannesburg's notorious Old Fort Prison complex, commonly known as Number Four. This is where thousands of ordinary people were brutally punished before the dawn of democracy in 1994. Many South African's leading political activists, including Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, were detained here.
• Soccer City Via Diepkloof Ext:
The venue hosted the opening and the final matches of the 2010 FIFA world cup, as well as other fixtures. It is nicknamed "The Calabash" because of the design. It is 95000 capacity stadium which is used for soccer, concerts and religious gatherings.
• Diepkloof extention:
Enter Soweto via the upmarket area called Diepkloof extention where some of the houses costs millions. The area was allocated for black middle class during the times of Apartheid.
• Diepkloof Hostel:
Diepkloof hostel was built by the Apartheid government in the 1970's. The hostel was used as a single gender accommodation for migrant labourers. It is now used as an informal lodgings for family units.
• Regina Mundi ( latin word "Queen of the World")
Is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa. It is often referred to as "the people's church" or the people's cathedral". It can accommodation the congregants of up 2000 some standing.
A highlight of a visit to Soweto is a delicious lunch at one of the well run restaurants patronized by both tourists and locals alike, offering typical "township" favourites including dombolo (steamed bread), morogo (spinach), Umngqusho (Xhosa samp and beans better known as umaduma ezinqeni which is Nelson Mandela's favourite dish), Mogodu (tripe) and a variety of meats, salads and vegetables. Desserts and drinks are not included.
• Hector Peterson museum:
After lunch the trip continues to the neighbouring suburb of Orlando West & the Hector Peterson Memorial.
Visit the fascinating museum which is a state of the art multi media centre depicting scenes leading up to the student uprising of 1976 and the eventual transition to democracy in South Africa.
• Mandela Family House:
We then visit the newly revamped Mandela House and Visitors Centre in famous Vilakazi Street which is filled with many interesting artefacts and memorabilia pertaining to South Africa's greatest icon.
• Depart Soweto:
You go back having experienced the township life in its many forms.
